5K, Ballet and a Spinal Cord Injury

5K, Ballet, and a Spinal Cord Injury Jennifer Starzec (Author), Sarah Todd Hammer (Author), Umaiyal Sridas (Illustrator)

Synopsis: “5k, Ballet, and a Spinal Cord Injury” is the true story of Jen, a runner, and Sarah Todd, a dancer, and their journey with Transverse Myelitis, a neurological disorder of the spinal cord that causes paralysis and more.

Review: This is a fairly quick read written in the voices of two girls, one of a preteen and one a teenager. The book talks about their struggles with getting diagnosed but it also talks about their triumphs in overcoming challenges. It’s a very personal account of their illness and the support they received from family, friends, and the medical community. To be honest, for me, it got to be tedious and a bit boring as the book went on. I do, however, think this would be a great gift for  young people struggling with TM. I believe they will feel validated, understood, and related to by their peers. I applaud these girls for sharing their story!

Bookishly yours,

Robin
